This debt-ceiling bullshit was terrifying for me if only because I had always been taught that our system of checks and balances was both fair, and best represented the interests of its people. But take a moment to think about all those talking heads throwing empty ideals around at the expense of a functioning government. The demographic of white and/or male and/or wealthy and/or college (nay, ivy-league)-educated folk is hugely over-represented in our legislature, because money now runs the United States’ federal government, not freedom, not democracy, not the fundamental rights of common man. Every year, increasing amounts of money go towards political advertising, with the largest spenders winning a revolting majority of elections. IT MAKES ME WANT TO CRY. Corporations have been increasingly granted the same rights as human beings, but guess what? A corporation has no moral compass, no compassion, no soul. Seriously, check out Massey Energy. If a human being had caused so many deaths of innocent people, he would be imprisoned or executed, but a corporation is merely fined a few thousand dollars.
We as a society have become content to be bought, to have men in suits assume that we are incapable of determining what choices are best for government. Thanks to Parks and Recreation, the hipsters and I now know that local government can in fact get shit done. State governments, while not always passing perfect legislation, are at least still very much held accountable to their constituents. Y’all, I will never get over the fact that lobbyists are legal. We are literally ENCOURAGING collusion between big business and politicians at the expense of American citizens. Have none of us seen Mr. Smith Goes to Washington? WHY ARENT WE ANGRY? AND WHY DONT WE DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT?
Basically, I think the U.S. should take a good look at its founding documents and fix the bullshittery we are neck-deep in. Barack Obama cannot fix everyone’s problems, nor should he be expected to. The tenth amendment is pretty clear: “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.”
